Dr. John R. Sweeney Jr, graduated from Vanderbilt Engineering School Magna Cum Laude in 1972 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1976 and completed a pediatric residency at the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va, in 1979. He practiced general pediatrics in the Navy for five years and developed an interest in diseases of the immune system. He subsequently entered a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati (affiliated with the University of Cincinnati) and completed the fellowship in 1986. He then returned to the Naval Hospital and created the Asthma and Allergy Clinic, which served both pediatric and adult patients. He ran both of these clinics until his retirement from the Navy in 1996. He has been in private practice in Suffolk and Portsmouth since that time. He was the only board-certified allergy and immunology doctor providing care to both adults and children in Portsmouth, Western Chesapeake, and Suffolk until being joined by Dr. Thamiris V. Palacios-Kibler in 2017.
Dr. Sweeney is a widower whose wife died when his three children were very young, all while maintaining a successful allergy practice and taking good care of his patients. He raised his children as a single father and now has six grandchildren.
Dr. Sweeney is Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, a Conjoint Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of Virginia, and the Tricounty Medical Society.
Dr. Sweeney is an avid supporter of the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters and has been a Gold sponsor of the annual Midnight and Mistletoe fund-raising gala since its inception.

Dr. Thamiris V. Palacios-Kibler
Dr. Palacios-Kibler, is an allergist/immunologist specialist, who recently joined Dr. John Sweeney at Asthma and Allergy Clinic. She graduated magna cum laude in 2011 from Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed an Internal Medicine residency and her Adult and Pediatric Allergy/Immunology fellowship at the University of Virginia. She then worked as a clinical instructor at the University of Virginia teaching residents, medical students and fellows about allergy and immunology, while seeing patients and conducting research. During her time at the University of Virginia, she was actively involved in numerous research projects to advance the knowledge of chronic urticaria, common variable immunodeficiency, severe combined immunodeficiency and Entopy (localized allergic rhinitis) and has several publications in various medical journals. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Allergy/Immunology.
She is an active member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology as well as the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. She has presented her research at state and national meetings. She is experienced in treating a variety of conditions including environmental allergies, contact dermatitis, sinus disease, asthma, food allergies, eczema, hives, and other allergic disorders
Dr. Palacios-Kibler believes that as an allergist, her primary role is to help individualize a treatment plan for her patients in order to improve their quality of lives and health, but also to give them a better understanding of their disease and bring cure to their allergies. Dr. Palacios-Kibler is bilingual in English and Spanish and is accepting new patients.
Ms. Alice is a native of Suffolk, Virginia. She went to the University of Old Dominion and graduated 1999 with a master in Family Nurse Practitioner. She is dually certified in American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP). She has been working with Dr. John Sweeney since 2007. What she loves about Allergy/Immunology is taking care of patients from the entire age spectrum and looking forward to forming long lasting relationships with her patients. She has over 10 years' experience treating adult and pediatric patients with asthma and allergic disorders. When she is not working, you will find her in the barn, hanging out with her husband, grown children, grandchildren and taking care of her loveable horses and other farm animals.
